Homemade Tractors

Designed and built by innovative mechanically minded farmers out of necessity to farm more land, or to be more efficient in their farming operations.

Mission of the project

Homemade tractors was started in the interest of preserving and sharing the history of these amazing one-of-a-kind farm-built, four-wheel-drive tractors.

Howard Stemen grew up on a farm near Edgeley, North Dakota. He has always been very mechanically inclined, and in 1964 he got the idea to build his own four-wheel-drive tractor

Chris is also a fan of homemade tractors and currently has three in his collection. I want to start with a tractor that was built by Chris’s dad, Don Wathen.

LeRoy Berg Sr. from Fairmount, North Dakota built a homemade tractor in 1964.  It is just one of the many machines he built.

In 1965, farmer Donald Hartness (who was also known as Tommy, after his father Tom) of Gwinner, North Dakota decided that he wanted a larger tractor to use in his farming operation.
